WHAT THE-!?!?
― Henry Stickmin[src]

Not to be confused with Henry Stickman.

Henry Stickmin is the titular main protagonist of the Henry Stickmin series, who appears as the protagonist of Breaking the Bank, Escaping the Prison, Stealing the Diamond, Infiltrating the Airship, Fleeing the Complex, and Completing the Mission. He is a mostly silent protagonist, often letting his actions speak for him. His morality is dependent on the players' choice, he starts out as a criminal and is depicted as such in most of the routes he is featured in, but his afflictions can change depending on the players' choices.

Henry is a kleptomaniac criminal who started out as an insignificant thief out to make some quick cash. After breaking into a bank and being caught by the police, Henry was imprisoned at West Mesa Penitentiary, but managed to escape by either escaping sneakily, busting out, or being found not guilty in court. Henry's life quickly changes, and he becomes somewhat of a well-known criminal after his successful theft of the Tunisian Diamond. Henry is then approached by General Hubert Galeforce and pilot Charles Calvin of The Government, who offer to drop all charges against Henry if he helps them take down the Toppat Clan criminal organization by infiltrating their airship. Henry can either work with the government to take down the Toppats, steal the Romanian Ruby from the Toppats after destroying their airship, or join the Toppat Clan as its leader.

Sometime later, Henry is imprisoned in The Wall complex until he manages to escape, either by himself, with a fellow prisoner, Ellie Rose, or with assistance from Charles or the Toppat Clan. After escaping from The Wall, Henry is tasked with a new objective; to defeat or help (depends on his choices) the Toppat Clan and prevent or assist with their plan to launch a space station into orbit. Depending on which endings of the previous two games are treated as canon by the player, Henry either becomes a successful Goverment agent, a professional bounty hunter, a cyborg or a space resort owner, or continue with his criminal ways, either solo, with Ellie, or as part of the Toppat Clan criminal organization, he can also be pardoned along with Ellie.

As he's the main protagonist, Henry is one of the most popular and well-known characters in the series. Henry's appearance was developed throughout the series. In Breaking the Bank, Henry is depicted as a stickman with a face but no arms and feet, and he gets his modern design for the first time in Escaping the Prison, now having arms and feet. He is voiced by PuffballsUnited, the creator of the series.

Bios

  • Breaking the Bank - He's short on cash so it's time to get some. (Not to be confused with Henry Stickman)
  • Escaping the Prison - Arrested for the attempted burglary of The Bank, he now sits in Red Mesa Penitentiary.
  • Stealing the Diamond - Life has been rough after breaking out of prison. Time to make some quick cash by stealing the Tunisian Diamond.
  • Infiltrating the Airship - Captured by the government, he's been given the chance to clear his name by taking down the notorious Toppat Clan.
  • Fleeing the Complex - Back in jail, huh? The icy cold cells of The Wall will be hard to escape from.
  • Completing the Mission (Henry Stickmin) - What could happen next...?
  • Completing the Mission (Mysterious Vagabond) - A drifter who's come into town lately. Seems like he's not just passing through.
  • Completing the Mission (Ellry) - The Fusion of Henry and Ellie. They have the fierceness of Ellie and the luck of Henry.

Appearance

Henry wears brown shoes in all his appearances. If he becomes the new leader of the Toppats, he wears a black hat with a golden dollar chain. If he just joins them, he wears a dark blue hat with a golden "H".

In the Revenged ending of Completing the Mission, Henry is brought back with cybernetic enhancements by Dr. Vinschpinsilstien, similar to the ones that she gave the Right Hand Man in other endings. His cybernetic features include a metallic left arm and a spine.

Breaking the Bank

Caught in Bank

Henry being caught after breaking into a bank

Henry tries to break into a randomly-placed bank which is rather a vault in the middle of a desert. In his trials and errors, he uses a shovel to dig a tunnel, explosives, a laser drill, a wrecking ball, a Teleporter, and finally, a disguise. All the tools he uses, except the disguise, backfire against him. Although the disguise also leads him to his imprisonment, the others end up injuring him; however, unlike the fails of other games, these are considered canon as Henry is noted to have taken "many cuts and bruises" and "quite the beating" in Escaping the Prison.

When Henry puts on the disguise (an empty money bag), he crawls into the bag, ties it from the inside and lies on the side of the road. A truck from the local bank stops, and the drivers, Winston Davis and Ted McAdams thinking another group dropped it, collect the bag and haul it to the bank, depositing it in the vault. Henry gets out of the bag in joy but he accidentally triggers an alarm and is subsequently imprisoned for an attempted robbery.

Escaping the Prison

Henry in his cell at West Mesa Penitentiary

After Henry's arrest, a package appears out of nowhere (due to a Center for Chaos Containment member named Ellias Bahtchin fixing the multiverse imbalance anomaly a year later). Dave Panpa sees the package, and Rupert Price calls him, and then Dave gives him the package, reminding Rupert that it's for Henry.

The next part of Henry's story begins with him in West Mesa Penitentiary. Rupert and Dave call his attention, Rupert toying with him saying he was free to go, then laughing at him saying he was kidding. Then, they give him a package he received, mentioning that they already checked for anything useful. However, Dave had actually not checked the package. As they leave, Henry opens the box to find a cake that opens up and has something inside of it. Henry reaches down into the cake only to find and use several tools to his advantage. He eventually escapes from prison by either escaping sneakily, busting out, or being found not guilty in court.

Henry stealing the Tunisian Diamond

Henry tunes to a news broadcast on TV, which shows Mayor Gene Fredrickson announcing the grand opening of the new Tunisian Archaeological Exhibit inside the National Museum of History and Culture. Within the new exhibit sits the priceless Tunisian Diamond, valued at a whopping $112 million dollars.

Henry is ten days late on rent payments for his house. Seeing the diamond's price tag, he decides to take off for the museum in order to steal the giant gemstone. On the outskirts of the museum, Henry can choose how to breach into the facility. All three choices result in Henry successfully stealing the diamond.

Henry becomes somewhat of a well-known criminal after his successful theft of the Tunisian Diamond.

Infiltrating the Airship

Henry on a Governent helicopter being tasked to help bring down the Toppat Clan

After stealing the Tunisian Diamond from the museum, Henry has been kidnapped by the Government, waking up on board a helicopter. There to greet him is Captain Hubert Galeforce, who recognizes Henry's skills as a criminal, and gets him to put them to the test in a mission.

The Government has trouble capturing a collective of criminals known as the Toppat Clan. They are unable to pin them to criminal charges, thus they can't take legal action against them. Henry's mission is to infiltrate the Toppat Airship in an effort to bring them to justice.

Noting Henry's lengthy criminal record (attempted robbery, escaping prison, and grand theft), Galeforce informs him that all charges against him will be dropped, if he gets the mission completed. Charles Calvin, the helicopter pilot, takes Henry closer to the Airship and asks him where to disembark.

Depending on the player's choices, Henry can either help the government and become either a bounty hunter or government supported private investigator, go rogue and steal the Romanian Ruby from the Toppats, or betray the government and become the new leader of the Toppats.

Fleeing the Complex

Henry with ellie

Henry and Ellie Rose locked up at The Wall

At The Wall, a heavily-secured incarceration complex located in Canada, the Warden, Dmitri Johannes Petrov, and his second-in-command Grigori Olyat, find a lengthy criminal record in their files belonging to Henry. Deeming him to be dangerous enough for incarceration at The Wall, the two decide to move in to kidnap Henry.

Henry wakes up at the complex where he finds Dmitri "welcoming" Henry to his new home. Dmitri states that only the most notorious criminals are held there. Dmitri taunts Henry by informing him that he would remain at The Wall for a long time, before ordering Grigori to take him and send Henry to a transfer cell.

Grigori escorts Henry to the Transfer Cell, ordering him to stay put before guarding the door of the room. In the Transfer Cell, a woman by the name of Ellie Rose is also awaiting a transfer to her cell. With Grigori turned toward the hallway, Henry can plan his means of escape. Depending on the player's choices, Henry can escape either solo or with Ellie, or with help from either Charles or the Toppats.

Completing the Mission

Trio

Henry and Ellie with Charles Calvin

Henry can appear in a variety of different scenarios. After escaping from The Wall, he is tasked with a new objective; to defeat or help (depends on his choices) the Toppat Clan and prevent or assist with their plan to launch a space station into orbit.

Depending on which endings of the previous two games are treated as canon by the player, Henry either becomes a successful Government agent, a professional bounty hunter, a cyborg or a space resort owner, or continue with his criminal ways, either solo, with Ellie, or as part of the Toppat Clan criminal organization. He can also be pardoned along with Ellie.

Various scenarios will turn out from the different endings of Infiltrating the Airship and Fleeing the Complex, such as:

Abilities

Henry dodging bullets

Henry dodging bullets shot by the police at West Mesa Penitentiary, and throwing one back at Captain Ed Roberts.

Although Henry is a human, he possesses some supernatural powers. In Breaking the Bank, Henry ties the knot from the inside of a bag, which is not realistically possible. In Escaping the Prison, he picks up a flying AK-47 bullet and launches it to the other side, causing Captain Ed Roberts' rifle to fly out of his hands. He also has lots of accessibility to many types of technology.

His strength level varies between the routes and fails. In some, he is shown to be physically weak, being incapable of taking people in a fight without his tactics or gadgets, whereas in others, he successfully takes people out with relative ease (an example being Sven Svensson in Special BROvert Ops using one punch, and the Right Hand Man in Master Bounty Hunter by using a low-effort combo.)

Henry is utterly terrible at shooting even when his target is right in front of him. From blowing himself up with a rocket launcher in Prison, to somehow managing to miss every single shot he fires at a guard at point-blank range in Diamond and also missing his ninja star in Infiltrating the Airship, to accidentally shooting Ellie with a sniper rifle while trying to show off in Complex. That said, his aims are greatly improved in Mission; with how he successfully snaps the tether holding the rocket in the Stickmin Space Resort route with a well-placed sniper round and guns down multiple Toppats with Pew Pew Gun in Free Man route being prime examples, though he still can screw his shot here and there, such as the Toppat King route gives Henry a 95% chance of landing a headshot and still managing to barely miss all four shots.

Henry is extremely smart and resourceful, being able to escape prison with just one item from a contraband cake and other items he found lying around. He also uses much of "Gadget Gabe" technology, which is very advanced, such as teleporters, opacitators, liquidizers, and transdimensionalizers. Henry is also occasionally shown to be quick thinking, as when he fails to spook Handsome Harold with a faux spider on a stick, he quickly improvises and knocks him out with the stick. In the later games, Henry begins to use items that reference other media, rather than ordinary items lying around.

His skills and resourcefulness are even acknowledged by Dmitri Johannes Petrov, who expresses his admiration since Henry was the first person to escape his complex The Wall. If Henry starts a riot, he will claim that no major incident happened in fifty years until the very day he showed up, also indicating Henry's exceptional skills.

In the Revenged ending, Henry is given cybernetic enhancements by Dr. Vinschpinsilstien, similar to the ones that she gave the Right Hand Man in other endings. Henry was given a cybernetic spine and left arm, which allow him to transmute his cybernetic spine into a jetpack and allows him to create weapons such as gun and sword with his left arm.

Henry has a Spirit called Reference, which has the ability to swap positions with its user instantaneously, or swap appearances with each other in order to deceive the enemy. Reference can also punch an enemy into an alternative timeline they see fit. Reference and Henry can become very cocky when fighting their enemy which often leads them both into tough situations. However, they are both also incredibly resourceful and powerful which contributes to their cocky nature.

FTC Distract Remastered

Further supernatural powers Henry can use are as follows:

Personality and Relationships

Henry is a mostly silent protagonist, often letting his actions speak for him. On several occasions, he lets out a word or two (such as the grenade belt in Escaping the Prison, and the branch fail in Stealing the Diamond). In Completing the Mission, Henry is considerably more vocal than in previous instillments. He can be heard detailing a plan to Charles Calvin, asking a Toppat security guard to raise a barrier, and reacting to misplacing the Leafmöde in a fail, as well as speaking nearly a full sentence to Ellie Rose during the CorrupTick fail scenario (line was originally said by Ellie).

HenryCellRemastered

Henry in his cell at The Wall

Henry is a majorly lucky, yet equally unlucky person. He frequently makes silly and outright mindless decisions, which is usually what leads to his many incarcerations. He sees himself to be legendary and commonly acts in a grandiose manner, but this cocky behaviour is usually what causes whatever mission he is on to result in often humorous failures. He is remarkably greedy, constantly in pursuit of valuable items such as various large gemstones, miscellaneous precious items stolen by the Toppat Clan, or simply just cold-hard cash - which causes him to get in trouble more often than not. His combat techniques reflect his reckless nature.

Henry Toppat Leader

Henry as the leader of the Toppat Clan, relaxing on the Airship

Depending on the path chosen by the player, Henry can also be seen selflessly helping others out. Henry can choose to free Dave Panpa from the Toppats' captivity, a guard who is, ironically, guilty of his prison outbreak. He can assist his cellmate, Ellie, in their escape from the Wall. He can also agree to Charles' dangerous mission proposal in order to take down the Toppats for good, despite not having anything to directly gain from it. These scenarios make for solid evidence showing that as arrogant as Henry may be, he does genuinely care about other people and/or his friends and isn't entirely out for himself.

Screenshot 2023-05-24 at 20.50

Henry stealing the Norwegian Emerald

Henry's primary trait is his selfish greed. He is first seen attempting to rob a bank in the first game. His persistence was rewarded with a jail sentence, yet it becomes very obvious too that being jailed for the failed robbery did not make any difference and he immediately chases after a nearby bank truck in the Lawyered Up ending of Escaping the Prison once acquitted.

Even after being arrested and having to escape, it is clear he learned little, with his eyes turning into dollar signs upon seeing the Tunisian Diamond on the news and immediately preparing to steal it. In spite of this, he knew where to draw the line in his greed, since he willingly abandons the diamond in order to save himself. He is also completely willing to commit murder to further his agenda, as he willingly drops the diamond on a guard's head with no hesitation.

Ellie and Henry escaping The Wall

Henry and Ellie escaping The Wall

He is even offered a full pardon by the Government if he fulfilled their request, yet his lack of self-control over his greed proves to be too great. Upon seeing the Toppat Clan's gigantic Romanian Ruby they stole, he promptly abandons his mission and steals the ruby. Power-hungry and quite opportunistic, he has the option to betray the feds and take over the Toppat Clan when he catches Reginald Copperbottom, who surrenders the airship to him after Henry defeated the Right Hand Man.

Captured once again at The Wall complex, he sets out to escape once again. He has the option of escaping with a fellow convict named Ellie and for the seemingly first time, having a true friend that helps him all the way. That being said, in order to escape, he ends up freeing every prisoner and uses the riot to escape, not caring about what consequences those actions warrant. He also has the option to simply abandon Ellie and go on his own, perfectly illustrating his willingness to use or expend anyone should it benefit him.

Henry and Charles

Henry with Charles, whom he is closely allied with in all routes where Henry is part of the Government

Henry, despite everything, does care about other people if they are on his side. This is best seen when he breaks down after Charles sacrifices himself to save Henry.

Depending on the choice, Henry could backstab anyone he's working with. In Airship, Henry could abandon his mission from the government to strike on his own by either stealing the ruby or joining the Toppats instead. He also able to optionally leaves Ellie behind after she helped him in Complex.

As soon as he gets the package in Escaping the Prison, everything helps him, directly or indirectly. He gets out of prison, he steals the Tunisian Diamond, is pardoned by the government or becomes the leader of the Toppat Clan in Infiltrating the Airship, and escapes the Wall in Fleeing the Complex. In the Ghost ending of Complex, he abandons Ellie as soon as she outlives her usefulness. He receives no comeuppance for this in three of the four routes in Mission that follow from this ending (he isn't so lucky in Executive/Ghost).

Reginald betrays Henry

Henry being betrayed by Reginald Copperbottom

The Betrayed ending in Fleeing the Complex is the first ending that has Henry getting his punishment, as he's killed by Reginald. And when that doesn't stick, he's killed for real in the Revenged ending from Completing the Mission by Reginald again after he gets his revenge on the Toppat Clan. Henry also gets a punishment in another one of the endings for Mission, though he does not die in this one.

Ellie confronting Henry with a gun

Henry being confronted by Ellie

After betraying Ellie yielded no results in Complex, she winds up following him to the Toppat Clan's airship, exposing him which results Reginald, using Henry's betrayal as an example, convinces much of the Toppat Clan to overthrow him. This puts Henry in a civil war between his much smaller team of loyalists and the rest of the clan led by new leader Ellie, stopping what would would have been an easy means of becoming the leader of a significantly large crime organization.

Quotes

Henry only speaks a few words and sentences, generally leaving the player alone to decide what Henry feels. There are several scenes in which Henry says a few words, but it's never a full sentence.

It is implied that he speaks in full sentences to characters such as Charles, but this has never actually been shown. These are a few examples:

Breaking the Bank

  • "Yea!" - Henry breaking into the bank using a disguise. (Legacy version only)

Escaping the Prison

"WHAT THE-!?" - After using the belt of grenades option in Sneaky Escapist.

Stealing the Diamond

  • "Heheh- Wait..." - Henry after using the "branch" option in Intruder on a Scooter.
  • "FALCON PAW... awnch??" - Henry attempting to use the Falcon Punch option in Unseen Burglar.
  • ¨Eyy?¨ - Henry tries to bribe the police in Intruder on a Scooter.

Trivia

HenryMainCharacterNAV
  • Henry's name is not revealed until Escaping the Prison. In the legacy version of Breaking the Bank he is simply known as "the guy."
  • Henry has two determinant top hats as a Toppat Clan member. One of them is a black hat with Reginald Copperbottom's dollar sign necklace, while the other is a navy blue hat with a golden H pinned on it. The former one is when he's the leader, the letter is when he's a normal member.
  • Including all the fails, Henry has died around 150 times. A list of all his deaths can be found here.
  • Henry is the only character whose voice is pitched, but not by three semitones. Instead, his voice is pitched by 2.2 semitones.
  • Henry seems to still retain memories of his fails, even if canonically he never took those choices (usually because they end in his death). To name the examples:
    • Henry develops a hesitance and then later a hatred for the Teleporter. This is despite the fact that he would have never have used the device before his one successful attempt in Diamond (so his reluctance and fear of it make little sense, considering how eager he is to try anything else), and he wouldn't smash and stomp on it in hatred in Mission if he had either not used it before or used it once successfully. So he likely has knowledge of his fails from other attempts.
    • By this logic, Henry shows some frustration at Charles' numerous failed attempts to assist him, which makes the "I don't need your help!" choice possible while Henry is sneaking into the electrified airduct in Airship.
    • The same applies for the "Charles" option, and how Henry reacts to it: surprise in Airship, fear in Complex, and panic in Mission. Additionally, in the former two, he doesn't understand Charlie's plan until he notices the helicopter approaching; in the latter, he starts panicking as soon as Charles claims that the situation "calls for some bold action"
